Job Description

Duties: 1. Program Administration: Develops, coordinates, updates, and implements health education on an individual or group basis through counseling, lectures/group dynamics. Employee handbook/newspaper articles/flyers/bulletin boards, etc. Assists with management of O.H. program and its effectiveness for federal employees; provides for health care needs of workforce. Provides continuous orientation/training to clinic personnel/program beneficiaries regarding O.H. to include post employee training. Assists with program coordination within command, installation and community to military and civilian health agencies, and unions. Assists with evaluation of occupational health program, current or changing needs for O.H. services. Participates in planning, coordination and implementation of the nursing aspects of a comprehensive O.H. program. Assists with the development/updating of O.H. nursing policies, procedures and protocols. Participates in formulation of medical directives within the scope of The Nurse Practice Act. Assists with collection, accurate preparation, and provision of reports/statistics of clinic operations. Provides technical guidance to subordinates. Assists with coordination/implements management of the MIMS (Medical Information Management System). Establishes a viable O.H. continuous Quality Improvement/Peer Review Program. 2. Provides Occupational Health Nursing Services to assigned installation. Insures objectives of O.H. Program (OHP) as described in appropriate guidance are met within available resources to include pregnancy surveillance, chronic disease surveillance, monitoring, radiation and respiratory protection programs. Conducts medical surveillance programs, physical examinations and physical assessment health screening and monitors/coordinates scheduling of patient care appointments, discriminates between normal and abnormal findings to recognize early stages of serious physical, emotional or mental problems, discusses deviations concerning medical care needs of patients with physician/physician assistant and makes independent decisions regarding nursing care needs; secures a health and O.H. history from the employee; records findings and determines/obtains appropriate diagnostic tests as it relates to potential occupational hazardous exposures. Assesses need for mass screening program and initiates coordination/implementation as necessary with supervisor. Assesses the health care needs and insures the provision of care for occupational injuries/illnesses and incidents of potential hazard exposure. Coordinates with health care providers to insure continuity of care through referral and/or follow-up. Insures proper documentation for FECA and Safety Office reports. Strives to continuously reduce FECA claims IAW appropriate guidelines. Interprets, records, summarizes O.H. statistics/medical records; collaborates in periodic audit of nursing programs, procedures, and health records. Provides full range of emergency services or crises intervention in the absence of the physician/physician assistant, including life saving emergency procedures in order to stabilize a patient sufficiently. Complete employee health care follow-up. Takes resuscitative measures in cases of cardiac or respiratory arrest. Assesses the health care needs and provides or coordinates the provision of care for occupational and non-occupational injuries and illnesses. Coordinates with health care providers to ensure continuity of care through referral and/or follow-up Recognizes hazardous exposures and initiates treatment and follow-up. These potential health hazards encompass a broad spectrum including: chemical (industrial), chemical toxic agents (military), physical (e.g., radiation-ionizing, lasers, etc.) and biological agents. Administers medicines/treatments authorized by physician/physician assistant. Notifies supervisor of unsafe conditions and exposures, requesting their assistance in evaluating the worksite to determine if any relationship exists between employee's symptoms and hazardous exposures. Provides primary nursing care for illness occurring in the workplace. Conducts individual/group counseling and health education programs to employees; prepares and provides handout materials, teaches and insures safe working practices, provides guidance in promoting preventive medicine. Maintains current certification in CPR: attends nursing seminars/reads medical literature to remain current in O.H. nursing. Assists with maintenance of medical records. Collects and analyzes data to be used in making recommendations for the development, expansion or improvement of MEDDAC health programs or modification of work environment to eliminate health hazards. Conducts job site visits. PERFORMS OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED.
