Job Description

MAJOR DUTIES: 1. Anesthetizes patients for a broad range of surgery extending from the simplest to the most complex of surgical procedures (e.g., neonate, major vascular, neurosurgery, etc.). Evaluates patient's physical and mental status with respect to anesthesia, consulting with the anesthesiologist, if necessary, to evaluate patient's condition and desired anesthetic course of action. Reviews type of anesthesia to be utilized with the patient, explains expected outcomes and possible anesthetic complications. 2. Determines appropriate techniques, drugs, and equipment for use in the administration of anesthesia to all patients undergoing any and all forms of surgical and/or diagnostic procedures. Administer anesthesia by inhalation, endotracheal intubation, intravenous, hypobaric and hyperbaric subarachnoid block, axillary block, intravenous block, trans-tracheal and superior laryngeal block, local infiltration, and topical application. Induces anesthesia to proper levels and manage patient's anesthetic care throughout surgery. Determines need for and administers parental fluids, including blood, and plasma. Set up intravenous solutions and maintain proper flow rate. Performs invasive monitoring techniques and interprets the information obtained through the use of these monitors. Administers vasopressor and hypotensive drugs as required. Observe the patient during surgery for signs to accomplish and maintain the proper stage of anesthesia and to prevent overdose. Adjusts the level of administration of anesthetic agents and adjunctive drugs and utilize proper methods to support patient's respiratory, circulatory, and renal functions. Gives immediate postanesthetic care to patients for the extent of time required to provide patient airway, adequate fluid volume and urinary output, and freedom from possibility of shock or other adverse reactions during transport to and stay in the recovery room. In emergency situations, when a physician is not present or immediately available, initiates appropriate measures, to include resuscitative measures during cardiac or respiratory arrest. Assumes responsibility for care, sanitation and inspection to ensure proper functioning of all equipment used. 3. Routinely administers, manages, evaluates and reports action of new anesthetic agents and drugs as well as experimental drugs. Participates as an Adjunct faculty member facilitating the conduct of approved research by students, and residents, designed to obtain and assess the conduct of anesthesia at MAMC. Assists in reporting finding which are statistically significant or represent improvements in national anesthesia practice. Supports research by direct or indirect participation to include data collection, interpretation and computation, preparation for publication, etc. (20%) 4. Provides clinical instruction to nursing students, interns and residents rotating through Anesthesia, and for other students learning venipuncture and airway management. Participates in weekly anesthesia conferences; arranges for guest and consultant speakers for in-service educational programs; prepares and presents in-service lectures and case studies for the purpose of providing knowledge and skills to certified registered nurse anesthetists, anesthesiologists, student nurses and other health care professionals and paraprofessionals. 5. Participates and cooperate with the anesthesia quality assurance committee to maintain and/or improve quality of care within the Department of Anesthesia. Participates in continuing professional education programs as prescribed by the Council on Recertification to meet the Army's requirement for mandatory biannual recertification. This is accomplished through seminars, conventions, university courses, in-service conferences, etc. Perform other duties as assigned.
