Job Description

1. Clinical Duties: Provides comprehensive professional nursing care to patients during labor and delivery in obstetrical wards. Medical conditions range from normal to those having complex complications such as breech delivery, prolonged labor, care of premature and/or seriously ill infants, and patients with unusual physical and mental disorders associated with their conditions, requiring sophisticated, highly technical care and treatment. Works closely with provider and supervisory nurse, as well as nonprofessional personnel to establish a nursing care plan that complements the prescribed medical treatment and needs of the patient. Conducts patient assessment to include vaginal examinations to determine cervical dilation, effacement, and station, and application of fetal scalp electrode, as required. Recognizes, identifies, and interprets serious situations and obstetrical neonatal crises. Observes, monitors, and assesses patient's changing condition; recognizes, identifies, and interprets serious situations; undertakes preplanned emergency measures when provider/midwife is not immediately available. Collects blood, urine, and amniotic fluid specimens for laboratory analysis. Assists providers with complex or potentially life-threatening procedures such as cardioversion and insertion of invasive lines, drains or monitoring sensors, emergency surgical delivery, and intubation of trachea. Assists with dressing changes, cleaning and bandaging of wound incisions, lacerations, infected areas, and examinations. Observes each patient's vital signs such as blood pressure, pulse, respirations, temperature, weight, etc. Requests x-rays and pathology studies as directed by providers. Performs procedures such as catheterizations, EKGs, fetal heart, and uterine contraction monitoring in accordance with established procedures. Executes medical orders, guiding nursing assistants and other medical personnel as appropriate. Maintains accurate and complete records reflecting patient's total care and needs and observes and records information for each patient receiving care. Provides emergency care including initiation of life sustaining measures such as Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), choking first aid, bleeding control, treatment of injuries, etc., in the absence of the provider and assists with advanced cardiac life support measures. 2. Medication Administration: Performs procedures, treatments, and medication administration. Assesses patient's response to medication administration. Utilizes analytical thinking and critical decision making prior to the administration of medication based on knowledge of the affects to include side effects of the medical on the physiological processes and current condition of the patient. Competent in performing medical administration via oral, intramuscularly, subcutaneously, intravenously, topically, etc. Maintains continual awareness of approved medication dosages and addresses uncommon dosages for ordered medication with ordering provider. Renews medication orders after thorough medication list review and verification of any side effects, allergies, contraindications, and continued treatment needs with the patient in accordance with (IA W) Air Force (AF) and local instructions. Provides for the safekeeping and accurate accounting of controlled drugs and narcotics IA W AF Regulations, MTF, and American Association guidelines. Sets up and operates a variety of specialized medical equipment such as, but not limited to, resuscitators, cardiac monitoring devices, automated external defibrillators (AEDs), EKG units, oxygen analyzers, ventilators, and electronic fetal monitoring devices. 3. Continuing Education: Participates in continuing education programs to update and/or maintain skills and knowledge to meet annual requirements. Participates in department and unit-level in-services/briefings, and in continuing quality and process improvement measures. Uses current research findings and other evidence to expand professional knowledge, enhance role performance, and increase knowledge of ambulatory care nursing professional issues. Completes all training requirements designated by facility, supervisor, or accrediting agencies; participates in continuing education programs to update and/or maintain skills and knowledge to meet licensing requirements. 4. Patient Instructions: Provides instructions to patient/significant other and/or family members/caregivers. In coordination with the clinical provider, provides individualized, thorough instructions prior to surgery delivery diagnostic procedures and/or in-home care. Evaluates patient's/caregiver's understanding of current health and health literacy. Emphasizes the preventive, curative, and restorative aspects of instructions. Emphasizes and instructs patients, families, and/or caregivers on preventive and therapeutic interventions, health promotion and maintenance, care outcomes and goals, as well as care coordination. Ensures patient, families and/or caregivers acknowledge understanding of instructions and participate in the plan of care. Follows established protocols using professional judgment to individualize instructions to meet each beneficiary's needs. Delegates appropriate nursing interventions to nursing team members based on their demonstrated competency, state practice acts, available evidence-based guidelines, regulatory standards and organizational policies ensuring assignments/duties are compatible with the individual's skill level. Performs other duties as assigned.
