Description: Scope of services include, but are not limited to; - Employee works under the supervision of the Emergency Department Chief. - Employee works with full professional responsibilities for his/her actions and advice. - Responsible for the examination, diagnosis and treatment of the full range of patients seen in the ER. - Receives patients entering the ER having any of a variety of emergency conditions during after duty hours as need arises. - Makes immediate critical decisions involving difficult emergency cases (e.g., heart attacks, head injuries, lacerations, seizures, etc.) and initiates treatment. - Treats the physical condition of the patient or recognizes and refers patient to a specialist for diagnosis and treatment when necessary. - Performs minor surgery as required. - Works independently in a Level 2 trauma setting. - Instructs and supervises other medical personnel in care and treatment of patients. - Administers and prescribes medicine and treatment. - Order diagnostic tests and discriminate between normal and abnormal findings and makes appropriate treatment decisions. - Provide supervisory oversight residents, fellows, medical students, NP/PA students, as appropriate. - Provide supervisory oversight of the clinical care on the inpatient service and ambulatory clinic of Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants as appropriate. - Participates effectively in team meetings and treatment planning conferences, and collaborates with multidisciplinary team members in a manner that enhances coordination of comprehensive patient care. - Provide weekend and holiday coverage of the medical inpatient service in rotation at a frequency determined by the Chief of Medicine or Chief of Staff. - Ensures that the practice of medicine is consistent with Joint Commission, MEDCOM policies and procedures, and clinical practice guidelines. - Other duties as assigned by the Chief of Staff within clinical privileges to meet the needs of the organization. - Carries out duties in accordance with the accepted standard of care and in accordance with established military rules and regulations. - Completes required records (both paper and electronic) pertaining to all medical services provided in accordance with specified procedures and regulations. - Exercises independent judgment with full responsibility for professional diagnosis, treatment, referral and disposition of patients, IAW Health Information Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) standards. - Ensures the highest standards of professional practice and ethics are maintained. - Participates in Continuing Medical Education (CME) and quality assurance activities as assigned. - Work is subject to rotating shifts and/or irregular tour of duty to include weekends, nights, and/or holidays, depending on area of assignment.
