Job Description

MAJOR DUTIES Serves as the full-time primary eye care provider performing the full range of professional optometric duties with a strong emphasis in the pre-operative evaluation of refractive surgery patients and the post-operative evaluation and management of refractive surgery patients with the assistance of staff ophthalmologists. Examines, diagnosis, treats diseases and disorders of the visual system, the eye, and associated structures as well as diagnosis related systemic conditions. This includes, but is not limited to, diagnosis and medical treatment of eye diseases such as conjunctivitis, iritis, episcleritis, blepharitis, glaucoma, epithelial defects, recurrent erosions, complications of refractive surgery, etc., and eye injuries such as corneal abrasions, ocular foreign bodies, chemical and thermal burns of the eye. This requires a thorough working knowledge and appropriate application of advanced instrumentation, advanced optometric procedures, diagnostic drugs, therapeutic drugs, evaluation and management of surgical patients, and advanced medical management of eye disease and injury. Responsible for primary call duties on a rotating schedule during non-duty hours under the supervision of a staff ophthalmologist. Independently performs the following duties: Performs comprehensive and limited visual and ocular examinations on all types of patients; including, but not limited to refractive surgery patients, pediatric patients, adult patients, geriatric patients, learning disability patients, low vision patients, contact lens patients, and patients who work in eye hazardous occupations. Provides the proper diagnosis, management,and treatment of all patients that are within the scope of optometric practice and credentials. Performs and evaluates all necessary tests that deal with the eye portion of all types of physical exams, including DODMERB physicals. Diagnosis and treats any visual anomaly and pathologic conditions of the ocular adnexa and the eye that are within the optometric scope of practice. Performs a wide range of tests to include the use of diagnostic drugs or any clinically approved method for the evaluation of the visual system. Treats pathology and injuries of the eye and adnexa using therapeutic drugs. Removes foreign bodies from ocular surfaces and anterior tissue. Comanages complicated patients with ophthalmology. Provides eye and vision consultative services to the medical staff and others as needed. Serves as an authoritative source of information in the areas of eye, vision, corrective and protective eyewear, occupational vision, vision readiness, and military optometry. Refers patients for consultation to other health care providers when appropriate. Provides expert advice and training to the Warfighter Refractive Eye Surgery Center staff to maintain proficiencies and improve efficiency. Works directly with the clinic technicians in the evaluation and care of all patients. This includes, but is not limited to the development of and providing educational talks and instruction to clinic personnel and others as necessary. Collection of refractive surgery outcome data and assisting in the analysis of such data. Determines fitness for service members and potential service members, including the determination of fitness for induction, retention, special military training, and/or duty. As a preceptor, provides supervision, teaching, and guidance to the senior optometric interns and /or Health Profession Scholarship Program Students. Provides special and advance optometric evaluation, management and treatment as needed in the following areas: contact lenses; visual fields; low vision; vision training; ocular photography, both internal and external; laser and microwave/radio frequency workers; flight physical evaluation. Provides training to eye specialist students that regularly rotate through Blanchfield Army Community Hospital as part of their Phase II training program. Manages data and information that deals with the Warfighter Refractive Eye Surgery Center, including the writing of memorandums, letters, and reports. Assists in the preparation and submission of requests for logistical support concerning the repair of medical equipment and facilities engineer work. Participates in the planning, preparation and submission of MEDCASE and CEEP expenditure requests for the Warfighter Refractive Eye Surgery Center. Requests and recommends expenditure of clinic operating funds. Provides professional supervision and training to all eye technicians. NOTE: SPECIAL WORK REQUIREMENTS This position requires working in locations at Fort Campbell, KY that may require the wearing of protective safety equipment. This includes, but is not limited to, the hospital eye clinic, the Warfighter Refractive Eye Surgery Center, and the hospital emergency room. This position requires extended periods of both sitting and standing and a moderate amount of walking. The incumbent must qualify to be an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Optometry with any affiliated academic institution. Performs other duties as assigned.
