Program Overview
The
Kalamazoo Center for Medical Studies KCMS is a nationally recognized university/community based residency program jointly funded by Kalamazoos largest hospitals,
Borgess Medical Center and
Bronson Methodist Hospital. KCMS faculty members enjoy academic affiliations and research support from
Michigan State University College of Human Medicine,
and
MSUs College of Osteopathic Medicine and
Western Michigan University.
KCMS has a total of 172 residents enrolled in the following programs Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, General Surgery, Internal Medicine, Womens Health Track, Medicine/Pediatrics, Orthopaedic Surgery, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, Sports Medicine Fellowship, and Critical Care Fellowship 2008. KCMS also offers a Transitional Year Program and an Osteopathic Internship.
The KCMS faculty is comprised of some extremely talented physicians and teachers. Psychiatry Program
The KCMS Psychiatry Program is a four year, clinically oriented program staffed by a faculty of 10 full-time and 2 part-time psychiatrists representing nearly all psychiatric sub-specialty areas. The Psychiatry Program has 16 residents and is directed by Dr. Robert Strung. Dr. Strung is an extremely nice, fair, well-respected and productive physician and administrator who has directed the Psychiatry Program since 1999. Dr. Strung is Board Certified in both Internal Medicine and Psychiatry and has been the recipient of several teaching awards, including the Nancy A. Roeske APA Award for Teaching Excellence. Dr. Strungs professional interests include psychiatric nosology, anxiety and somatoform disorders, psychiatry in primary care, consultation-liaison psychiatry, the psychiatric medical record, and educating for clinical excellence in psychiatry

You will become the eleventh full-time psychiatry program faculty memberjoining Dr. Strung, Dr. David Dunstone, Dr. Joseph Calles, Jr., Dr. Maritza Lagos, Dr. Michael Liepman, Dr. Thomas Picard, Dr. B.K. Ramesh, Dr. Suhail Sheikh, Dr. Ruquya Shama Tareen, Dr. Stuart Sheets, Dr. Perry Westerman and Dr. Roberto Flachier psychologist. Psychiatry faculty members enjoy an extremely strong professional relationship with the many community psychiatriststhere is no town gown. Furthermore, there are no internal political issues and all of the KCMS faculty members truly get along.
Practice
You will assume the position of Hospital Consultation/Liaison Psychiatrist. Your sole responsibility is to consult attending physicians in regard to potential psychiatric issues their patients present. Additionally, you will be asked to perform competency assessment when patients decline medical treatment.
You will always have two residents One 4th Year to assist you with your responsibilitieseach resident is assigned to one hospital. Most of your teaching will be done bedside, and you are required to spend one hour per week one-on-one with each of the two residents under your supervision. Additionally, you will have the option to do some lecture teaching if that appeals to you.
You would arrive at KCMS at 8am and spend the next hour preparing for your day. You will round on one hospital in the morning and the other in the afternoon. KCMS policy is to provide consultation services within 24 hours; typically, non-urgent consults that are requested in the afternoon can be seen the next day. Other KCMS faculty members will assist with consultations should volumes increase beyond a manageable level. Your day ends at 5pm.
You can expect to see around five consults per day. Roughly 75 of the consults are patients age 18-55; 20 are geriatric patients and the remaining 5 are child/adolescents. On average, each consult takes about 45 minutes to an hour followed by notations and dictation. About 70 of your patient contacts are one time visits, the other 30 will require follow up; the residents can usually handle the follow up. The KCMS Psychiatry Clinic and offices are connected to BorgessHospital via skywalk. This makes it easy for you to round on the med/surg beds at Borgess and BronsonHospital is less than 10 minutes away.
Both hospitals are set up with advanced EMR systemsrecords may be accessed at the KCMS office and from home as well. However, progress notes at both hospitals are hand written; which has proven to be far more efficient for the KCMS psychiatrists. The KCMS office is 100 electronic.
Call
The general call expectation is that each physician is on call two week nights of call per month. This call can generally be handled over the phoneit is rare that youll actually have to come into the hospital. The number of calls youll field varies, but you can expect 0-4 calls in an average night.
Every six or seven weeks, you will be required to take weekend call. There are always three psychiatrists rounding on the inpatient beds. Normally, youll see a couple of follow ups and 4 new consults on Saturday. Dr. Strung stated that he usually works from 9am until 2pm. On Sunday, youll have a few new consults and can usually be finished by 1pm.
Expectations
The ideal candidate will either be fellowed in psychosomatic medicine or have at least one year of full time consult/liaison experience. The incoming faculty member should feel comfortable seeing a very small percentage of child and adolescent patientsthe child and adolescent psychiatrist is always available if a consultation is beyond your comfort level. Candidates should enjoy teaching, be willing to attend all department meeting, possess good time management skills and have a collegial personality. Research is encouraged and supported, but is not required.
Hospitals
Bronson and BorgessHospitals are both 400 bed facilities that have received multiple awards on community, state, and national levels. Borgess hospital houses Kalamazoos only inpatient psychiatry unit. The unit is made up of a total of 46 beds 24 general adult, 16 geriatric, and 6 adolescent beds. Both facilities are modern, comfortable, aesthetically pleasing and have invested a lot of money into the equipment and support staff that are available to physicians.
Compensation
Base salary in the range of 138,000-145,000 for an entry level academic rank. Each year, KCMS assessed the median national salary for comparable academic positions and offers raises to reflect increases.
