Created by the NC General Assembly in 1899, Scotland County rests on the border of NC and SC, only 100 miles from the Atlantic Ocean. The Lumber River, with its grassy banks and trees draped with beards of Spanish moss, forms most of the eastern border.

The Scotland County School System serves 7,000 students in 14 schools, all of which are accredited by the State of NC and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Education beyond the high school level is available locally at Richmond Community College (RCC) a two year school, and at Saint Andrews Presbyterian College, a four year, coed, liberal arts institution. The Laurinburg-Maxton Airport provides hangar space for private aircraft and charter service. Destinations throughout the Southeast and the rest of the country may be reached from a commercial airport in Fayetteville, located just forty-five minutes from Scotland County.
