Location: Vermont
Classic New England city with a population of 20,000 people. Situated in a broad valley between the Green Mountains to the east and the Taconics to the west. Our main industry is General Electric, which operates a turbine jet engine manufacturing business and has done so since the 1950s. There are numerous smaller industries and tourism remains vital to the area with the popularity of skiing, snowmobiling, hunting, fishing, boating, hiking, and scenic touring. In the summer months we have music in the park in an old fashioned bandstand twice a week, Friday Night Live where a downtown city block is closed and music and art incorporated in a block party format. Many people come to Vermont to enjoy our many lakes, hiking trails, and scenic back roads and small towns. Both the Long Trail and Appalachian Trails come through Vermont very near the city. Fall brings beautiful foliage and crisp days and is one of our quickest, busiest tourist times. Winter brings tourism that includes some of the best skiing east of the Mississippi, including Killington, Pico, Okemo, Bromley, and Stratton ski resorts. Our coldest month is January, and warmest is July. January highs are 25, lows 08, and July highs 80, lows 59 degrees.
To the south we have Southern Vermont Art Center with continually changing exhibits. Opera fans can go either to Burlington, VT or Hanover, NH for evening performances. Saratoga Performing Arts Center in NY, a natural outdoor amphitheater, is an hour drive away and is a beautiful setting to enjoy Opera, ballet (The NYC Ballet practices here in the summer), and rock concerts - the list for this past summer Rush, Nichelback, John Mayer, GooGoo Dolls, Meatloaf, Lifehouse, Moody Blues, Allman Brothers Band, Incubus, and Dave Matthews.
There are wild flower walks, Green Mountain hiking club, farmers markets, and contra dances throughout the county.
Kid's activities include skiing, ice hockey, and soccer. There are six dance studios and a gymnastic facility. Local art galleries offer many art classes for kids. The state is filled with incredible wilderness type camps, both overnight and day types. Vermont ranks best in the country for number of teacher per student ratio.
For adults there are beautiful golf courses close by, excellent skiing, many Yoga studios, 3 large health clubs and several small ones, indoor tennis, art classes, carving classes, fishing and hunting schools, outlet shopping, hiking, book clubs, boating, and numerous outdoor activities.
