For over twenty-eight years, Hospice of Wake County has provided compassionate end-of-life care and has earned a reputation for outstanding professional expertise in helping families experience quality of life. We are the oldest, largest, and most experienced hospice organization serving Wake County. We have over 100 professional staff and 250 trained volunteers who provide expert medical care and supportive services to over 1,500 families each year. These services include: counseling support for families; short-term respite care; spiritual care and counseling; volunteer support; bereavement care; and end-of-life education.

We are currently seeking a full time MEDICAL DIRECTOR for our rapidly growing hospice. This position oversees the medical component of the Hospice Program for a base population of 800,000 people.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Collaborate with the attending physician to certify terminal illness status for hospice patients
  • Provide medical expertise on pain and symptom management and on the evaluation of terminal prognosis
  • Recertify eligibility for hospice care for subsequent election periods
  • Collaborate with the attending physician and IDG to establish the patients plan of care
  • Participate in the development of patient care policies and procedures
  • Provide direction to patient care teams on physician coverage when the Attending Physician is not available
  • Provide physician back up for urgent patient care issues
  • Participate in events and activities that enhance the credibility and visibility of Hospice of Wake County, Inc. and its role in End of Life Care.
  • Serve as resource in the development and approval of agency work place health care policies specific to state, Federal, ACHC and OSHA regulations
  • Participate in the Ethics Committee
  • Participate in education, training and research activities for patient care staff and medical/lay community
  • Supervise medical activities and provide guidance to Hospice Team Physicians, Palliative Care Physicians and Staff Pharmacist
  • Requirements include:

  • A doctor of medicine and Board Certified in Hospice and Palliative Medicine
  • Licensed to practice medicine in North Carolina
  • Possess a current Narcotic License
  • Possess: a team-orientation; excellent interpersonal skills; strong communication skills; and the ability to create positive relationships with internal and external customers
  • Management experience and/or experience as a Medical Director preferred
  • Experience with a freestanding inpatient and residential facility and/or experience with university relations is desired
