Our hospital is adding 3 new hospitalists in 2010. The hospitalists manage inpatients (designated and unassigned emergency patients) that may require admission or medical consultation.

Some of program highlights are:

  • 7 full time hospitalists and pursuing additional full-time internists to start August, 2010. The need will persist until the hospitals needs are fully covered.
  • Rounds on no more than 22 patients a day. Three physicians are scheduled on the day (7a-7p) shift. The program is looking to expand its day coverage and assist with medical consults for surgery patients.
  • The day shift providers admits no more than 5 admissions daily per provider (locums may advise the ED and the on call medicine physicians rotate the admissions). Because he/she is not rounding routinely, the night providers admissions is capped at 8. All adult patients, no pediatrics
  • Other hospitalists are present on day shift but the hospitalist is solo at night (primary focus is admission with rounding only as needed)
  • A post shift conference with oncoming hospitalists meets the hand-off communication requirement.
  • There is 24 hour ED, radiology and anesthesia coverage. Hospitalists are not first responders to codes. Pulmonolgists are in the hospital 12 hours daily and assist with vent management.
  • Employment model with

    12 hour shifts 7 am-7p, 7p to 7 am (the schedule is provider friendly and no 7 days shifts are scheduled unless it reflects a physician's preferences. A dedicated nocturnist helps out 16 shifts a month and others rotate through the evening shifts)

    Hourly salary

    Compensation is $230,000 with guaranteed 16 shifts per month
