Alabama Hospitalist

VAMC located in the Southeast US is in need of a Contract Hospitalist to start 10/1/09. Any state license accepted. Candidates should be Board Certified Internists with current ACLS. Responsibilities include working on the inpatient general medical unit and medical ICU and providing adult Internal Medicine coverage for patients admitted to the general medical ward and ICU and (as needed) to the surgical ward, surgical intensive care unit and post anesthesia care unit. Generally, there are 3 hospitalists on duty during work days. The regular work week is Monday through Friday from 8a-4:30p. One hospitalist is assigned ICU attending duty for a 14-day period. This is assigned on a rotational basis. Hospitalists also support the respiratory therapist in the home oxygen program. General medical on-call is assigned on a rotational basis and is shared among the 8 primary care physicians and the hospitalists to cover the hospital on nights, weekends and holidays. All candidates must submit a medical staff application, enter VETPRO information and be approved by the Director after credentialing and privileging is completed. Hospital Specifics: There are 7 ICU beds (mixed med/surg); 23 general medical beds; and 1 surgical bed. Sub-specialties supporting the hospitalist are: cardiology (non-interventional), pulmonary, neurology, general surgery, urology and general orthopedics. No major surgical procedures are performed. Procedures expectations include being comfortable with the following: Abdominal paracentesis, Arterial puncture for blood gas analysis, Arthrocentesis, EKG interpretation, Endotrachael tube placement, EKG reads, H&Ps, Lumbar puncture, Mechanical ventilator management, Simple suturing, and Thoracentesis.
