Hospital Description:
La Porte Regional Health System, Inc., (La Porte Hospital) a regional acute care facility featuring 227 private rooms, provides healthcare services to the residents of northern Indiana and southern Michigan. Included in its 227 private rooms is a 12-bed Critical Care Unit. La Porte Hospital opened in 1972 and in 1996 began a $16 million renovation of the facility. It has a staff of over 100 physicians engaged in primary medical care specialties.
The Emergency Department, which was renovated in October 2001, sees approximately 21,000 annual visits. It has 12 rooms, which include an OB room, an ENT room, and a combined security/infectious room. There are two trauma beds, two cardiac beds, one orthopedic bed, and four minor treatment bays. The beds are L-shaped around the nurses station. There are three additional rooms available for overflow patients. There is double-physician coverage from 2:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. daily. Monthly averages of patients are 65% medicine, 15% minor and major trauma, 10% surgical, and 10% pediatric cases. Physicians are responsible for in-house codes.

La Porte, a community of 30,000 people, is located 70 miles from downtown Chicago, 15 miles from the beaches of Lake Michigan, and one-half hour from Notre Dame University in South Bend, Indiana. La Porte is often referred to as The Maple City or The City of Lakes because of its beautiful maple trees and the six lakes around which it has grown. Qualifications:
All ED candidates must be residency-trained, board-eligible or board-certified in Emergency Medicine. All double-physician coverage candidates must be residency-trained, board-eligible or board-certified in a Primary Care specialty.
