Wapato, Washington is a farming community of about 5,000 located in the heart of the Yakima Valley. Residents enjoy over 300 days of sun each year and are surrounded by fruit filled trees and fields overflowing with a wide variety of vegetables. Although only a town of 5,000, the farming history of Wapato has drawn a diverse population of Japanese, Filipino, Hispanic, and Caucasian residents in addition to the Yakama’s already living on the reservation. The very first Buddhist temple in Washington State was built in Wapato and is still open. Because of its cultural diversity residents enjoy community celebrations throughout the year. Residents are involved in their community and committed to its success. The community finished building a brand new high school in the fall of 2014. Recently local high school students were recognized by NASA for a hardware project that they are completing. They are 1 of only 15 other schools in the nation that will have their project tested in a zero gravity airplane. Although a small rural community, Wapato is located just a short traffic free 20 minute drive from Yakima, Washington. For weekend trips to the “big city”, Wapato is only 2.5 hours from Seattle and 3 hours from Portland.
