The images that have blanketed the airwaves and newspaper front pages across the nation in recent weeks show the devastation wrought by storms and earthquakes along the Pacific Rim. Heart to Heart International and the International Medical Corps are responding to the medical needs of people affected by these natural disasters, and the AAFP Foundation is offering Academy members a chance to support those efforts.
AAFP Urges Rapid Senate Approval of FP Regina Benjamin, M.D., M.B.A., as Next Surgeon General

The AAFP has called on the Senate to quickly approve the nomination of family physician Regina Benjamin, M.D., M.B.A., as the next U.S. surgeon general. "Quick action will ensure that American patients have an advocate who will work to ensure better understanding of maintaining good health," said AAFP President Ted Epperly, M.D., of Boise, Idaho, in a prepared statement.

Coca-Cola Grant Launches AAFP Consumer Alliance Program

The AAFP today announced a corporate partnership with The Coca-Cola Co., in which the beverage giant will provide a grant for the Academy to develop consumer education content related to beverages and sweeteners for the AAFP's consumer health and wellness Web site, FamilyDoctor.org. The partnership is the first for the AAFP's new Consumer Alliance program.
AAFP Leaders Address Members' Health Care Reform Questions During Telephone Town Hall Meetings

Two successive telephone town hall call-in meetings on Aug. 31 gave Academy leaders a chance to answer dozens of questions from AAFP members about the Academy's positions on several key health care reform issues, including the public plan option, Medicare payment reform and the patient-centered medical home.

The AAFP Congress of Delegates will meet Oct. 12-14 in the Grand Ballroom West of the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center. The Congress will convene in conjunction with the AAFP Scientific Assembly, which will meet Oct. 14-17.
